When something frightening or overwhelming happens, your brain does exactly what it was built to do: it switches into survival mode to protect you. Usually, once the danger passes, things settle back down. But sometimes they don’t. The event is over, yet your brain keeps acting as if it’s still happening. You might jump at small noises, struggle to fall asleep, feel on edge in places that should feel safe, or find yourself shutting down and feeling numb. Trauma isn’t only about the memory of what happened. It can leave its mark on how your brain works every single day.
Think of your brain’s alarm system like a smoke detector. A healthy one goes off when there’s a fire and stays quiet when you’re making toast. After trauma, that detector can become extra sensitive, sounding the alarm at every bit of steam. Your body reacts as if you’re in danger, even when you know, logically, that you’re not.
On a brain map, this often shows up in one of two ways. Some people get stuck in high gear. Too much fast beta activity keeps the brain scanning for danger, making it hard to relax, sleep, or switch off. Others go the opposite way and get stuck in freeze mode. The brain shuts down to cope, leaving them foggy, disconnected, or emotionally flat. Many people swing between the two.
Same experience, very different brain patterns.
Neurofeedback is a gentle way of teaching your brain that it’s safe to stand down. We start with a brain map to see how your brain is responding, then build a plan made just for you. If your brain is stuck in overdrive, we train it to slow down and settle. If it has shut down, we work on gently waking it up and reconnecting. Over time, the brain can learn new, calmer patterns, and many people find they sleep better, feel less jumpy, and start to feel like themselves again.
And here’s something many people are relieved to hear: neurofeedback doesn’t require you to retell or relive what happened. It works directly with how your brain is functioning right now. It also works well alongside talk therapy, so if you already have a therapist, we’re happy to be part of your team.
You don’t have to keep living on high alert. Your brain learned to protect you, and with the right training, it can learn to feel safe again.
